The Penny Test

Many say the penny test is still a great way to determine when it’s time to buy new tires. All you have to do is take a penny and insert it into the tire’s tread grove. Make sure President Lincoln's head on the penny is upside down and facing you. If you can’t see all of Lincoln's head, your tread depth is more than 2/32 inch and your tire still has the ability to grip the road in adverse conditions. If you can see all of President Lincoln’s head, it’s time for new tires because your tread is at 2/32" or less, and your tire is no longer considered safe. and can see the penny above President Lincoln's head.

Your Tire’s Lifespan

So many different elements factor into how long a tire may last—road conditions, the climate, how a person drives their car and how they maintain the tire, as well as the tire’s design.

Here are a few suggestions to potentially extend the life of your tires:

  1. Maintenance - perform regular tire rotations and maintain correct air pressure in your tires. A good rule of thumb is to rotate your tires with each oil changed. Check your air pressure every first Saturday of the month. This is extremely important to do with the change of seasons.

  2. Five-year rule - if your tires are more than five years old, have them inspected no less than once a year by a professional. Again, this is easy to do during a routine oil change.

  3. Ten-year rule - if your tires are ten years old or older, it’s time to replace your tires. No matter how great they look, they could prove hazardous on the road. If you’re unsure of your tires age, you can check the manufacturing date by checking the DOT number on your sidewall. It’s always good to follow the vehicle manufacturer’s tire replacement recommendations.Remember to include your spare tire as well.

Getting a Grip

Tire safety is determined by your tires’ ability to grip the road. Less tread means less traction. Traction gives your tires what they need to keep you on the road. While driving through water, for example, the groves in between the tread blocks of your tires serve as channels for the water to flow through and avert the water away from the tires. Tires can then maintain traction in adverse weather.

Little to no tread in your tires leaves the water with no place to go. So the water remains under your tires, providing little to no traction on the road. Decreased traction gives you less control of your car, especially in adverse weather conditions, rendering your car unsafe for you and those you love.

Check you tread! The depth of your tread will help you determine if it’s time for new tires. For an easy test, see “When to get new tires—the penny test.”
